S.O.S JUNIOR SHOWCASE

This letter is for current Senior-to-be football athletes. If you are not currently a Junior, this letter will inform you of what to expect in the Spring of your Junior year of high school.
This past season we had over 3000 athletes playing football in Indiana. .006 % of senior athletes received football aid at a Division 1AA level or higher, this means 99.993% of the senior athletes playing football in the state of Indiana did not receive football aid or received aid at a DII school or smaller. Receiving athletic aid (free money) to help with college is very competitive and very difficult to achieve. The biggest advantage you can give yourself is to be seen by the college coaches during the evaluation period when the college coaches can come in and watch you do drills in person.
The S.O.S. Junior Showcase is designed to bring multiple college coaches and schools to you instead of you traveling all summer to be seen by one school at a time. Our goal is to save you both time and money. The Junior Showcase is not a combine. There is no testing of any kind. The Showcase will show the college coaches our athletes performing football drills with emphasis in 1 on 1 competition, which allows our campers to best showcase their skills to the college coaches.
S.O.S. has set aside Sunday May 15th as the day in which all of the top current Juniors will be together at one site. Last year we had over 200 Juniors at our Showcase. All players and parents walked away from this exciting day pleased to be seen by college coaches from 42 DII, NAIA, and DIII schools representing 14 states. I hope you will mark May 15th on your calendar and attend this year’s S.O.S. Junior Showcase. If you are not signed up for the showcase, feel free to visit our website at www.sosfootballcamp.com to sign up for the showcase.

HCS Athletic Awards Night

Parents and Players,

Our High School Year End Celebration and Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, May 18 at 7:00 p.m. in the Elementary Gym is rapidly approaching. We want to celebrate our teams, our seasons, and our kids. This will be a desert reception/event.

Our guest speaker for the event will be Todd Abernethy, former Heritage basketball great and current professional player. Following the speaker we will: recognize our teams and briefly recap our seasons; honor our team MVP’s and Christian Leadership Awards winners; unveil our Doc Richards Scholastic Athlete Award winners; honor our Athlete of the Year Nominees and reveal the winners; and lastly, view an Athletic Highlight video prepared by Ross DeMerchant.

This will be an awesome evening to honor our athletes and most importantly our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I look forward to seeing you there.

Go Big Blue,

Coach Q

Colts 7-7 Time line

Players and parents,

The following is the timeline for June 4th, Colts 7-7. Players are responsible for their own transportation. We will take our white and blue jerseys (tightest fit available) and our blue shorts. You MUST be there by 8:30. The earlier times are really just for coaches, so you can grab a few extra minutes of sleep. We will use our game ball but you will not really need anything else for the day.

Keep in mind this is a limited roster event. I will contacting players to see if they have an interest in playing. I realize baseball may not be over and we may need to have some back up players in case baseball is still winning! With the new roster limit at 15, this could be a huge advantage for us. Remember, last year we made it to the final four with a reduced roster. Get ready to enjoy all God has planned for us.

Go Big Blue,

Coach Q

Colts lineman challenge

Players,

Here is the information for the Colts Lineman challenge. This is going to be a great day for HCS football on June 4! Fire Up! RQ

Indiana National Guard and Indianapolis Colts Ironman Lineman Challenge

- The Ironman Lineman Challenge will allow for the lineman of the prospective teams to participate in their own competition on the days of the 7-on-7 tournament.

PARTICIPANTS
5 or 6 players, only 4 participants per event

FORMAT
All of the events are shuttle based except for Hummvee Push and Sled Pull

SCORING
All events are scored on time. All the times from the events will be calculated to the get the overall time, from there, the lowest time overall wins.

EVENTS
- Hummvee Push
4 athletes will be used for this event. All together, athletes will push a truck down a 25 yard course as fast as possible. The scores will be determined by the team’s overall time. The event will begin with the front edge of the truck at the start of the course. When the athletes are ready, the driver will release the brake and honk the horn. The clock will start on the sound of the horn. Athletes will push the truck down the course. When the front edge of the truck has crossed the end of the course, the clock will stop. The athletes may begin pushing the Hummvee prior to the horn, if so, the time starts on movement.

- Tire Flip
4 athletes will be used for this event. There will be two participants on each side of the field. This event will consist of flipping a tire 20 yards. Each participant will start 3 yards back from the start line (holding line). When the whistle blows, the clock starts, they must run up to the tire, and begin moving it across the 20 yard competition area. They must get ANY part of the tire across the end line on the opposite end of the 20 yards. Once past the end line, they must slap hands with the next participant standing 3 yards behind the end line. The next participant will begin flipping the tire from the spot where it ended. The final athlete must flip the tire COMPLETELY past the end line, and then must run past the end line, time will end.
Penalties
If a player fails to flip any part of the tire across the end line, or simply pushes it across without flipping, before running to slap the next man’s hand, a 10 second penalty will be assessed at that time. The entire team must stand still for 10 seconds. Once the penalty is assessed, the team can begin the event again.
 If a player crosses the holding line before their hand is slapped by the previous participant, a 5 second penalty will be assessed at that time. The entire team must stand still for 5 seconds. Once the penalty is assessed, the team can begin the event again.

- Farmers Walk
4 athletes will be used for this event. There will be two participants on each side of the field. This event will consist of carrying two weighted bars 20 yards. Each bar weighs 185 lbs. Each participant will start 3 yards back from the start line (holding line). When the whistle blows, the clock starts; they must pick up the weighted bars and begin moving them across the 20 yard competition area. They must get the bars completely across the end line on the opposite end of the 20 yards. Once past the end line, they must slap hands with the next participant standing 3 yards behind the end line. The next participant has the option to move the bars up to the start line, or just begin carrying the bars from the spot where they ended. Once all four participants have completed the farmers walk, the final participant must run past the end line, which is when time will end.

Penalties
 If a player fails to get the bars across the end line before running to slap the next man’s hand, a 5 second penalty will be assessed at that time. The entire team must stand still for 5 seconds. Once the penalty is assessed, the team can begin the event again.
 If a player crosses the holding line before their hand is slapped by the previous participant, a 5 second penalty will be assessed at that time. The entire team must stand still for 5 seconds. Once the penalty is assessed, the team can begin the event again.

- Bale Run
o Very similar to the Farmers Walk, but with less weight, focusing on speed and control. 4 athletes will be used for this event. There will be two participants on each side of the field. This event will consist of carrying two bales of straw 40 yards (one bale per hand). Each bale weighs approximately 30 lbs. Each participant will start 3 yards back from the start line (holding line). When the whistle blows, the clock starts; they must pick up the bales of straw and begin moving them across the 40 yard competition area. They must get the bales completely across the end line on the opposite end of the 40 yards. Once past the end line, they must slap hands with the next participant standing 3 yards behind the end line. The next participant has the option to move the bales up to the start line, or just begin carrying the bales from the spot where they ended. Once all four participants have completed the straw run, the final participant must run past the end line, which is when time will end.

o Penalties
 If a player fails to get the bales across the end line before running to slap the next man’s hand, a 5 second penalty will be assessed at that time.

- Sled Pull
o 4 athletes will be used for this event. They will compete and be timed individually. The athletes will have to pull a sled holding 200 lbs. a distance of 20 yards. There will be a start line as well as a finish line. The athlete faces the sled, has a handle attached to the sled by 7 feet of rope and they back peddle or pull the sled in a backward motion with hips and shoulders facing the sled (they are looking at the sled as they pull it). The clock will begin on the athlete’s movement. The athlete must pull the sled across the 20-yard competition field and all the way across the finish line into the holding area. The clock stops when the entire sled crosses the finish line. The times will be added up to and that will be the team’s final time for the event.

Colts 7-7 and lineman challenge

The Colts 7-7 is on June 4th and this year they have added a lineman challenge. This is a limited roster event and I will be contacting 15 players to attend and participate in the 7-7 as well as 6 lineman. The format of the day has totally changed and this looks to be a great opportunity to kickoff our summer.

Look for more information soon.

Players, Thanks for coming in and talking about the upcoming season! I am energized in regard to your enthusiasm for the summer and preparing ourselves to receive all that the Lord has planned for us. Please continue to stop by and let me know how you are doing. KEEP UP ON THE GRADES!!! Many of you are doing fantastic in the classroom and are exceeding our expectations. Please continue to build your GPA during the 4th quarter. As we know, it is not how you start, it is how you finish! Finish Strong, Coach Q

summer calendar

All, Summer calendar is coming soon! The athletic department will have this information for us to get to you when I return from Spring Break. We will have the full summer calendar complete with 7-7 opportunities. I am trying my best to work with other sports as I am sensitive to the amount of time required by other sports in which you might participate. We will have this worked out soon. Enjoy spring break. Coach Q

Spring Break!

All, I trust that you have a safe and relaxing spring break. I will be in Florida and plan to catch a couple of spring practices in the area to take a look at how other schools run practice. Love to see how we can be even more effecient in practice next year. Also, if you are not going away for spring break a friend of mine, Jimmy Graves, is holding a local football skills camp. You can log on to www.footballperf.com to view his material. This would be wonderful opportunity to get a jump the upcoming season. Go Big Blue, Coach Q

summer schedule delayed

All,

I am sorry that you do not have the information that you need to make informed decisions about the summer. My plan of having these to you early was a bit too aggressive. If you or your son want to see the dates I have proposed then please have your son stop by my office and I will give them a draft. However, please note...this is only a draft an NO official dates have been released by the athletic department.

Until we get the official word from athletics, there is nothing officially planned for the summer. Thank you for your patience.

Lifting results - Congrats Randall Cork

Players and Parents...please read on!

Soon results from our lifting classes will be posted. When you see them, you too will say, Congratulations to Randall Cork! Randall is ranked, through total lifts, as the strongest player on our football team! This has nothing to do with size (weight) but rather his willingness to dedicate himself to being the best player he can be...regardless of size. Think about this...Randall is stronger (combining squat, clean, and bench) than players 25 pounds, 50 pounds, 75 pounds, 100 pounds heavier or even team mates twice his size! Randall is dedicated to being excellent in everything he does and the proof is in the results.

So, everyone else, take note. Randall has set the bar at a place where, at least, each lineman should already be and strive to surpass. Please, take the time and consider your plan of improvement.

Stop by and see me, I am always here!

Coach Q

summer schedule coming soon

The summer schedule is in the final stages of approval. I should have approval by early next week and then will post the entire summer schedule. On a different post, please pay attention to the lifting update. It is obvious that we need to be in the weight room **Before the summer begins!**

Please do not begin to think that lifting for the 60 days summer period (and only 16 lifts scheduled at the school) will lead to a state tournament run. With the strong upgrade in our schedule we must prepare our bodies for the 15 week long haul. The time is now!

Stop by and see me! I'm always in!

Moratorium Dates 2011

All,

The IHSAA official Moratorium dates for the summer of 2011 are July 4 - July 10. By definition:

RULE 15-3.4 MORATORIUM

Each member school shall observe a moratorium starting on Monday of the week which includes July 4th. During this seven-day period, there shall be no contact between athletes and coaches, and no athletic activities, including conditioning, conducted.

This Moratorium time would be the perfect time for a family vacation, mission trip, or just down time. If at all possible, please consider these dates when building your summer schedule.

summer workouts and 7-7

All,

I trust you are enjoying some added time at home during this Icebowl 2011! During the past few weeks I have heard from some of you in regard to your summer intentions for 2011. I realize you have mission trips, family trips and football camps to attend. Please let me know of the dates you are not available. I am attempting to put together an outreach summer workout schedule but want to be sensitive to the common dates that players will be away from the HCS campus.

I am in the final process of locking in dates with Mr. Freeman for the summer so if you want to give some recommendation to me prior to the final dates being released, please do so...ASAP.

Enjoy the ice! Coach Q

Zone training workouts

All,

The new year has started and many of you have committed to increasing your workout schedule. Thanks to our friends at Hoffacker, I now receive attendance reports for our Zone training held on Monday and Thursday. There are a few players who have improved via Zone training in the past two weeks (four afterschool workouts). Here is their attendance:

Calabro - 1x
Hutton - 2x
Lucas - 2x
Marsh - 4x (way to go!)
Schrock - 2x
Steeb - 1x

Kudos to those six players...but where are the rest of you? This is FREE Zone training to improve your speed, quickness, and agility!!! I realize some of you are involved in basketball or swimming...but the rest of you?

We want to "finish strong" next year and the only way to accomplish the task is in proper preparation. I look forward to much better attendance/results on Monday and Thursday workouts. Let me know if you have any questions.
